MUSEUM-MINE LA BAGNADA

The history of a talc mine ...

The history of Valmalenco, as the economy and its geology, is tightly linked to its mineral resources: asbestos and talc, "pietra ollare" and "serpentiniti". For centuries, the exploitation of these precious raw materials, has marked indelibly the life of the communities of this valley. "La Bagnada" mine was discovered around the end of the 20s from the joint stock Corporation of asbestos of Milano that achieved the first mining claim in 1936.

The intensive exploitation of the talc field of "La Bagnada", discovered during the searching of the asbestos , has been prolonged for over 50 years, till the middle of the 80s. The talc mining is nowaday very important for the economy of the Valmalenco, even if there one working mine only. Technological development has changed considerably the ways of mineral processing nowadays, but it did not cancel its historical memory. "La Bagnada" mine Museum is the history of this valley and of its inhabitants for discovering the past and its traditions, an experiece not to be missed.
