Lanzada
Together with Chiesa in Valmalenco, Caspoggio, Spriana and Torre di Santa Maria, Lanzada is one of the five municipalities of which Valmalenco is composed. Lanzada is the only town in Lombardy with an elevation exceeding 4000 m a.s.l.: the highest point is located on Piz Bernina (4.021). Its peak, with an elevation of 4.049 m a.s.l., is in Swiss territory.

Lanzada is located at an elevation of 983 m, at the entrance of Val Lanterna, where it merges with the main crack of Valmalenco. The origin of the name is uncertain: it might stem from the Latin term “lanceatus” (sharp), a reference to a geographical feature.
In Valmalenco, Lanzada is the town with the most important peaks, on the boarder between Italy and Switzerland. the Northern boarder is marked out by the highest mountain of Valmalenco, that are - from West - piz Glüschaint (m. 3594), piz Sella (m. 3511), piz Roseg (m. 3936), piz Scerscen (m. 3971), piz Bernina (m. 4049, the highest point of the whole province of Sondrio), Crast' Agüzza (m. 3869), piz Argient (m. 3945) and piz Zupò (m. 3995), the triple peak of piz Palù (m. 3823, 3906 e 3882), and piz Varuna (m. 3453).
Lanzada is also known for two artificial reservoirs. The Campo Moro dam is the first artificial lake encountered on the road. Its capacity is 10 million cubic metres, that are taken, through an 8km tunnel, to the power plant in Lanzada, with a jump of 900 m. After Campo Moro there is the Gera reservoir. Its walling, built using 1.800.000 cubic metres of concrete, is 110 metres high and therefore appears impressive to those who reach the plain of Campo Moro.
Lanzada is also famous for the mining activities, that have been part of it its history for centuries. The recently opened Bagnada mining ecomuseum allows anyone to know the different kinds of minerals mined in Valmalenco: soapstone, serpentine, asbestos and talc. Talc was mined in the Bagnada mine open to the public: special effects, video clips and the stories told by guides will allow visitors to plunge into the past.
